Derby Day

A big part of early May, here at my house, revolves around the Kentucky Derby...anticipation this year, for the 141st Run for the Roses, was electric!

My husband, and sons are thoroughbred racing fans, and their love and enthusiasm for the sport is contagious! You just can't help getting caught up in it! For weeks and even a month before racing season commences, the conversations begin....this years hopefuls, statistics and general hearsay, opinions and banter, pepper our family discussions...

We take turns hosting Derby Day, with friends who share our love for the sport...

It is fun to decorate in true Derby fashion, and plan a menu for the late afternoon, prior to the race...I drag out my vintage silver, and decorate with red roses, and mint leaves...

The mint leaves serve a double purpose!  They are clipped, fresh from the arrangement, for garnishing mint juleps....

This beautiful, and delicious cheese board was provided by a dear friend and guest...

A special edition of Woodford Reserve bourbon, the official libation of the Derby, adds to the decorations and festivities!

Bourbon glazed ribs, potato salad, fried chicken, coleslaw, were served after the race....

......spiced pecans, and this year,  breaking from tradition, my family's fav...double chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for dessert! And little bottles of Maker's Mark bourbon, as take away favours for everyone....

At the end of the day, it is all about, the most exciting two minutes in professional sport...

The magnificent horses, bred to run in the most prestigious race in America, perhaps, in the world...

In a few more weeks, the Preakness will grab the headlines, and our attention again!
