Collecting vintage silver......

With all the Spring rain we have been getting all week, my thoughts have turned from the garden to indoor pursuits...

It has been a good time to spend attending to things around the house that needed some attention...my vintage silver collection. Although I prefer a bit of tarnish, I don't like eating with tarnished utensils. Polishing silver may seem like a total waste of time to some, but I find it relaxing and a mindless reprieve from the everyday......so, I put on my rubber gloves and get to it!  Really it only takes less than a few hours to get all my things cleaned up!!

I like to use a silver polish foam, under warm water it produces suds, and gently cleans the silver with a foam sponge, that when rinsed, I just dry the silver piece with a clean, dry towel. I store cleaned silver cutlery, which I use frequently, in a footed glass compote with a lid. This makes it easily accessible as well as visible. Storing silver from exposure to the air keeps it from tarnishing as quickly.

I have been collecting silver pieces forever...I prefer unusual shapes, with flourishes, floral relief, or anything with little feet or detailing of any kind, interesting finials or handles will do me as well! This lovely hotel serving piece is insulated, so I presume it was used for serving coffee...I usually use it to hold floral arrangements....

Here, you can see the beautiful detail, as well as the large dent in the body! That it was imperfect did not deter me at all from acquiring it!

Anything footed appeals to me! This serving tray was a thrift store find.  If you are at all thinking of collecting silver, now is a good time!  It is reasonable and readily available....no one wants to polish it, and it can be found at local thrift stores, tag sales and flea markets.

A vintage water jug is kept beside my coffee maker on my kitchen counter. I use it to fill the reservoir with water...you can also see the spooner holding coffee spoons beside it. Again, I am drawn to beautiful embellishments and small details in the silver.

This vintage silver coffee pot sits on a shelf with lavender coloured transferware in my kitchen.

This rather large, hotel silver serving tray, which measures 34 inches across, holds crystal decanters on a cabinet in the great room/ kitchen.  Here, again you can see the lovely, filigree handles and feet....

I keep balsamic vinegar and olive oil in glass decanters, on a footed silver tray beside the cooktop in the kitchen....

More pretty, small details in the silver tray....

A vintage silver flower frog, the open work, lattice top is removeable, is a recent acquisition.... I can't wait to arrange peonies and roses from the garden in it!

And speaking of gardens, the sun has come out and is shining now!

And this adorable, little visitor has me thinking of getting out there as well!!

I have so much more to share indoors as well as in the garden....things are definitely greening up and Spring has arrived in full force...
